Alejandro de Loarte’s composition probably takes place in the Plaza de Zocodover in Toledo. A young woman, at her poultry stall covered with a shawl robe, fixes her gaze on the viewer as she receives a coin from a boy who has just bought a hen. The young man’s clothing indicates his position as either a servant in a wealthy household or a student: he wears a ropilla, a montera, a valona and a ferreruelo on his right shoulder. The scene is framed by the different species of birds that complete the post, responding to the Baroque aesthetic ideology not because of the excessive ornamentation, but because the scene reproduces the fleeting nature of the action.
