Terch Borch became famous for his intimate scenes in which the figures seem absorbed by the action taking place in their presence. In this scene, a soldier is depicted receiving a letter from a messenger. It is easy to imagine that the letter is a call to the front, which is easy to imagine from the soldier’s expression. This entailed being far away from the girl who stands so lovingly by him and who looks incredulously at the news.
