Salvador Maella depicts the interior of a house set in a snowy, nocturnal landscape, with a peasant couple warming themselves by the fire next to a table with dinner ready. The scene possibly alludes to the myth of Hades and Persephone linked to this season, during which Persephone lives in the underworld with Hades, her abductor, refusing the food he prepares to keep her in his kingdom.
