Artist Jan Havicksz portrays an intimate moment in which a young woman undresses before going to bed to wash herself after a long day in which she removes only a stocking. The slit left by her garter is visible just below her knee. Her raised skirt allows the viewer a peak down the length of her bare legs. The explicit eroticism of the image was not always favoured. Until a hundred years ago, a petticoat was painted over the thighs.
