Scenes of villains and townspeople, including those set in the frozen lake and canal regions, have a long tradition in the Netherlands, referring directly to the work of Flemish artists such as Brueghel the Elder in the mid-16th century. The style is based on the winter landscapes of mid-17th century Holland.
