During the Modern Age, it was common for large landowners to have farmhouses to carry out agricultural or livestock work. These were distributed around population centres, in the countryside and, if possible, near a river or stream. The constructive complexes were constituted as independent labour cells scattered around the territory, with bedrooms, kitchen, pantry, storage of grain, animals and farm implements. Architecturally, the composition consisted of a central courtyard surrounded by rooms for work and for storing livestock, such as corrals and stables. This courtyard had a direct exit to the outside without the need to pass through the rest of the house. The residential rooms were divided: while the owners occupied the main house, usually in the front area, in front of the courtyard, the workers occupied secondary rooms and independent outbuildings. The kitchen was large enough to bring the workers together. Finally, the building materials used were intended to ensure thermal insulation and waterproofing.

Age of Empires II features historical campaigns based on a novel storyline that spans a vast period between the 5th and 16th centuries. This definitive edition was released in 2019 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the original video game released in 1999, making some corrections and technologically improving an already excellent base.
Historically the game features the campaigns of 18 civilisations, starting in the Middle Ages after the fall of the Western Roman Empire and running through to the European Renaissance of the 16th century. The goal is therefore to strategically manage resources to build a vast empire and overcome other enemy factions.
The campaigns take a historical look at the lives and triumphs of different key figures from our past, such as William Wallace, Joan of Arc, Saladin and Genghis Khan, among others. As for the factions, this year’s factions are divided into Western European, Central European, Middle Eastern and Far Eastern factions, each with their own unique units and historically known warriors.

The post Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition first appeared on History Lab.

In this definitive edition, the graphics and music have been remastered, including all the expansions released to date and other never-before-seen content. The civilisations available include Spain, England, France, Portugal, Russia, Germany and many others.
The game’s setting focuses on the era of European colonisation of the Americas, with the Old World nations facing off against the newly developing powers.

Age of Empires IV is the latest instalment in the popular real-time historical strategy saga

The post Age of Empires IV first appeared on History Lab.

Age of Empires returns 16 years later to demonstrate why it is one of the most recognised sagas in historical strategy. On this occasion it combines the management that brought it so much success in its time with other innovative tools that facilitate the entry of both the new player to the strategy genre, thanks to the complete integrated tutorials, and the veteran who is looking for a challenge to match and who can handle more complex game mechanics and combat techniques.
Historically, this time it seeks to recreate the great battles that led to the building of our world as we know it. Through 8 civilisations, passing through England, China, France or the Sultanate of Delhi, we will face four great campaigns: the Norman conquest of England, the Hundred Years’ War, the Grand Duchy of Moscow and the history of the Mongol Empire. All these elements centre the game from the Dark Ages to the Renaissance of the 16th century.

The post Age of Empires IV first appeared on History Lab.

In Port Royale 3 the mighty kingdoms of Spain, England, France and Holland struggle to dominate the colonies scattered throughout the Caribbean in the 17th century. It is against this backdrop that the player must make his place among the great historical personalities through his skills as a merchant or directly through military combat. The 60 port cities and 16 historical types of ships, such as galleons and frigates, remain in the game.
For the first time in the prolific Port Royale saga and as the most important novelty compared to its predecessors, the game has a multiplayer mode for 4 players in local network or via internet, allying or competing to found the most relevant trading company in the Caribbean. Moreover, through the complex trading system implemented in the game, it will be the actions taken that regulate the supply and demand of both the transport of goods and the manufactured craft industry itself, deciding the price of the different goods.

The post Port Royale 3 first appeared on History Lab.

Port Royale 4 proposes to join the European colonial forces for supremacy in the 16th and 17th century Caribbean Sea

The post Port Royale 4 first appeared on History Lab.

Joining the colonial forces of Spain, France, England and the Netherlands, you must learn to manage a small settlement into a major trading city in the 16th and 17th century Caribbean. New in this fourth instalment of the franchise is the increased management and trade between the different islands, mediating large trade routes to meet the growing needs of each city. This time, everything is represented in a unique scenario in which everything takes place in real time, dispensing with the typical rooms typical of this saga. In addition, turn-based strategy also makes its debut in the saga, as this is how the naval battles take place and opens the door to a new military strategy.
Also new this time is the chronological expansion backwards in time, not only focusing on the 17th century, as there are four campaigns -one for each of the previously mentioned colonial powers-, each one is developed at the time when each of them dominated the Caribbean. Another substantial change is that introduced in urbanism and city planning, since poor management – locating housing adjacent to industry – or poor planning of basic services can lead to major problems such as plagues, social unrest and even mass emigration, which has a direct impact on the productivity and performance of the controlled nation.

The post Port Royale 4 first appeared on History Lab.

Cossacks: Art of War is a real-time strategy (RTS) game that allows you to relive the European history of the 17th and 18th centuries. By controlling the different factions that fought in these conflicts, you can train their armies, build their characteristic infrastructures and wisely manage resources in order to achieve victory. In addition, the role of naval battles has been enhanced, emphasising the importance of dominating the seas to counter the military might of other countries.
The different armies and the history of the countries are represented in great historical detail, allowing you to learn about the campaigns and the different units that each contender had when facing each other on the battlefield. The units that can be controlled during the game range from King Frederick II of Prussia to the Algerian pirates of the Mediterranean, with each campaign covering several missions throughout these two centuries of European warfare.

The post Cossacks: Art of War first appeared on History Lab.

Cossacks: European Wars is a historical real-time strategy (RTS) game based on events in Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries. Controlling up to 16 nations (such as Algeria, Austria, England, France, Saxony, Venice, etc.), the player must discover the unique characteristics of each one, strengthening key areas such as economy, technological development or military advantage, while dealing with the weaknesses of the different nations, such as the difficulties of nature they had to face in their countries or the weakness of certain social structures.
All in all, in this instalment of the renowned Cossacks saga, England stands out for its powerful navy, Austria has the most renowned cavalry of the age and France is heading towards the final blow to social cohesion of the last few centuries. In addition, this time there are real-time battles of up to 8,000 units, city sieges, guerrilla warfare and great naval battles between enemy powers.

The post Cossacks: European Wars first appeared on History Lab.

Cossacks: Back to War continues the path set by European Wars and Art of War by adding the nations of Switzerland and Hungary, along with over 100 new missions from the 16th to the 18th century. These two new countries conducted several war campaigns after the Middle Ages and influenced the military development of European nations.
Still with the historical background of the Cossacks series, Back to War recreates more accurately the European landscapes in 3D where up to 8,000 simultaneous units will meet. In addition, resource management is key, as surviving major historical campaigns is not only about warfare, but also about society, technology and the construction and improvement of cities. The key to victory lies in knowing how to manage all the gameplay elements that Back to War offers and making the most of them in a balanced way.

The post Cossacks: Back to War first appeared on History Lab.

American Conquest brings the features of the Cossacks saga to America

The post American Conquest first appeared on History Lab.

In American Conquest, veteran players of the Cossacks saga set off to America to explore the New World and discover riches. For this instalment, the game begins in 1492 when Columbus sights land in the Caribbean and so begins three centuries of warfare between 12 different sides, including European nations such as Spain, England and France, and local tribes such as the Aztecs, Incas, Mayas and Sioux.
Reviewing the actions of historical figures such as Pizarro or Washington, there are massive battles of up to 16,000 units, doubling the numbers of the previous 3D games. In these new scenarios, there are also new technologies different from the European ones, weapons characteristic of their inhabitants and the much-needed diplomacy gains weight and importance, as not everything is about making war and several sides can benefit from the exchange of resources. Finally, in terms of gameplay, morale is also introduced in the troops, where victories, defeats or available resources will constantly modify their characteristics.

The post American Conquest first appeared on History Lab.
