The Seville Museum of Fine Arts was founded as the “Museum of Paintings” by Royal Decree on 16 September 1835, with works from convents and monasteries confiscated by the liberal government of Mendizábal. This art gallery is considered to be one of the most important in Spain and through this interactive virtual tour we can easily and quickly access a large part of its permanent exhibitions of religious-themed paintings, mostly belonging to the Baroque style. It also has important works by Francisco Pacheco, Zurbarán and Murillo.
The building where the museum is located dates back to the beginning of the 17th century, built on the ancient remains of a Mudejar building, the design of which is attributed to the architect Juan de Oviedo.

The post Museum of Fine Arts of Seville first appeared on History Lab.

The Museum of Naval Construction, located in the Herrerías building, has managed to maintain the architectural structure typical of the 18th century. The important thing to note is that it houses two floors dedicated to the history of shipbuilding. On the ground floor we can access the different construction techniques, where we can also see in more detail the operation and the different parts of a ship.
On this visit we can see the wreck of the Fragata Magdalena, sunk in the Vivero estuary in 1810 and recovered by the Navy between the 1970s and 1980s.
On the upper floor there are a series of themed rooms such as the one dedicated to the Astano shipyard, called “Miracle in the Estuary”. Other rooms are dedicated to the Navy, its Ships and its Schools; the Shipping Companies, the Ports, etc.

The post Ferrol Shipbuilding Museum first appeared on History Lab.

The royal chapel of Granada, which was erected to preserve the remains of the Catholic Monarchs, was built in Gothic style between 1505 and 1517. The 16th century is the century of the chapel’s fullness, where the sobriety of the building is highlighted. Under Emperor Charles I it continued to flourish with all kinds of decorations. Today, the mark left by Queen Isabella, in a certain sense, marks the large number of visits that take place every year. On this website, users can access the history of the monument, as well as take a guided tour where they can see the different cultural contributions that the chapel has undergone over the last 500 years. This portal also contains complementary information on the Lonja, built in 1518 by the Granada City Council.

The post Royal Chapel of Granada first appeared on History Lab.

In the 1970s, an annex was added, which later, in 2001, was completed with the latest modifications to the building that we can visit today. Through the virtual visit we can approach the masterpieces of authors such as the 16th century German painter and designer of engravings Lucas Cranach the Elder, the Italian baroque painter Artemisia Lomi Gentileschi, El Greco, Murillo, Zurbarán and Goya, among many others.

The post Bilbao Fine Arts Museum first appeared on History Lab.

The Gran Enciclopedia Aragonesa (GEA) was first published in 1981, directed by Eloy Fernández Clemente. At the end of 2002, the digitalisation of its contents began and in 2003 the first version of the GEA Online was launched, with the collaboration of the Departments of Education and Science and Technology of the Government of Aragon. We access here to the History section of the Gran Enciclopedia Aragonesa (GEA) online, to focus on the political, social, economic and cultural characteristics of the 18th century in Aragon. The topics are organised into blocks, some of them being: the Bourbons and the War of Succession, the promulgation of the Nueva Planta Treaties, the emergence of the Aragonese party around the figure of the Count of Aranda, the Aragonese Enlightenment, Baroque art, the struggle between the bourgeoisie and the nobility or the life of the most disadvantaged. In addition, the encyclopaedia contains some didactic sections such as revision tests, timelines, etc.

The post The 18th century in Aragon first appeared on History Lab.

It contains an excellent digital collection based mainly on materials in the form of books, magazines, pamphlets and leaflets which have been previously digitised and which are mostly from the collection of the Library of the Royal Botanic Gardens. In this case, the Semanario de Agricultura y Artes addressed to the parish priests, created in 1797, aimed to inform in an updated way and through a newspaper-like format, of the advances and new techniques in the arts of Agriculture and Industry, both in Spain and internationally.
