Shortly after the accession of Ferdinand and Isabella to the Castilian throne in 1474, a process of restructuring and reform of the institutional structures of the State began, especially those dedicated to taxation and tax practice in order to cope with the new expenses that the crown would have to bear. The Royal Treasury had to face these circumstances by creating and establishing the “extraordinary” revenue as an additional tax category.
The establishment of the General Brotherhood in 1476 was justified as a means of restoring peace throughout the kingdom, but the intention of creating an army under the direct authority of the throne without putting too much strain on the weak Royal Treasury, which was in the process of reconstruction, could not be concealed for long.
This movement was prompted by the need for large sums of money in a short space of time, as a result of pressing needs such as the war in Granada at the end of the 15th century or the wars in Naples between 1494 and 1504. Revenues, therefore, were calculated in accordance with expected expenditure and not the other way round, denying the redistributive nature of the taxation practice that has presided over most tax systems.
The key to understanding the extraordinary revenues of the crown were the loans, understood at this time as the issuing of a small debt in exchange for financing. Since it was not considered as just another tax on the population, all subjects were eligible to pay loans without being limited by the directives of the General Brotherhood.

The post Revenues of the Holy Brotherhood between 1478 and 1498 first appeared on History Lab.

Radio documentary on Ferdinand VII and his reign. Described in his time as “The Desired One” by a people who saw him as a victim of Godoy, first, and Napoleon, later, he is considered one of the worst kings in the history of Spain. Born in 1784, he was the son of Charles IV and Maria Luisa of Parma. A conspirator against his father, Napoleon took advantage of the weakness and division of the royal family to force the abdication of the crown and hand it over to his brother Joseph. Exiled in France during the War of Independence, he returned to Spain in 1814. As absolute monarch he annulled the Constitution of Cadiz and persecuted the liberals. After Riego’s uprising, he had no choice but to swear the Constitution in 1820 during the so-called Liberal Triennium. Three years later the absolute monarchy was imposed once again, ushering in the Ominous Decade until his death in 1833. In the absence of a son, he repealed the Salic Law so that his daughter, the Infanta Isabella, could accede to the throne. With the Pragmatic Sanction, the Carlists, supporters of the Infante Carlos María Isidro, saw their hopes of succession collapse, provoking a civil war that would continue throughout the 19th century. Modesta Cruz’s documentary features contributions by Emilio La Parra and Juan Francisco Fuentes, as well as Miguel Artola Gallego, a former Prince of Asturias Award winner.

The post Ferdinand VII, a bad reign of a lousy king first appeared on History Lab.

TV series inspired by the life of Queen Isabella I of Castile, broadcast on La 1 TVE between 2012 and 2014. It had 3 seasons and 39 episodes. The series covers the events of Isabella from the time of the reign of Henry IV the Impotent until her death. Although it indulges in historical license, it is a product of enormous quality, which has been broadcast in more than 80 countries. Of particular interest is the series’ treatment of the figure of the Infanta Juana.

The post Isabel first appeared on History Lab.

American series, which shows the life of Mary Stuart in France, from her courtship with Prince Francis, from an adolescent and very sweetened perspective (in the style of the series Sex and the City or Gossip Girl). It consists of 4 seasons and 78 episodes. The historical reconstruction and the script have many licences and errors. It can be a good example for a critical exercise in historical rigour. The best thing about the series is undoubtedly the character of Catherine de Medici. And the worst, the portrayal of the Infante Don Carlos, Philip II’s first-born son.

The post Reign first appeared on History Lab.
