Europe is today home to major Muslim populations because of a modern history in which the Ottoman presence over a part of the continent was accompanied by colonial domination of European powers, with its subsequent effects on economic migrations. Here we will examine three aspects of the relation between gender, Islam, and Europe. First, we will concentrate on the systems of representation built by European cultural elites with respect to Muslims, as well as their variation according to class, race, and gender. Second, we will broach the policies of nation states toward their Muslim populations, which have fluctuated between assimilation and stigmatization depending on the period and location, in addition to the responses of Muslim elites who juggled between religion-based community building and integration within broader national. Finally, we will concentrate on the ability to act of Europe’s Muslims, which is reflected in the variety of their gender discourses and practices.

The post Islam and Gender in Europe first appeared on History Lab.

The word Balkan is Turkish and means ‘mountain’. The Balkans, or the Balkan Peninsula, is a region in the south-east of Europe. This map shows the geography of the Balkans and their religious and ethnic diversity. On this map the Balkans comprise the areas of Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, Albania, Macedonia, Greece, Bulgaria and Romania. The westernmost part of Turkey is also included. The largest of the colour-coded groups on the map is the South Slavs or Yugoslav group which forms the majority of the population in several countries. The other national groups represented here are Romanians, Greeks and Albanians, as well as many other ethnic minorities who live in the region.

The post Ethnographical map reproduced from The Balkan Peninsula by Jovan Cvijić first appeared on History Lab.

Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity, Judaism, and Islam are five of the biggest religions in the world. Over the last few thousand years, these religious groups have shaped the course of history and had a profound influence on the trajectory of the human race. Through countless conflicts, conquests, missions abroad, and simple word of mouth, these religions spread around the globe and forever molded the huge geographic regions in their paths.

The post Animated map shows how religion spread around the world first appeared on History Lab.

Video in which John Green teaches you the history of Islam, including the revelation of the Qu’ran to Muhammad, the five pillars of Islam, how the Islamic empire got its start, the Rightly Guided Caliphs, and more. Learn about hadiths, Abu Bakr, and whether the Umma has anything to do with Uma Thurman (spoiler alert: it doesn’t). Also, learn a little about the split between Sunni and Shia Muslims, and how to tell if this year’s Ramadan is going to be difficult for your Muslim friends. Let’s try to keep the flame wars out of this reasoned discussion.

The post Islam, the Quran, and the Five Pillars first appeared on History Lab.

It is perfectly human to face some questions like “Where did we come from?” and “How can we live a meaningful life?”. These existential questions are at the heart of the five most widespread religions in the world, and it is not the only thing that connects these faiths. John Bellaimey illustrates the interrelated histories and cultures of Hinduism, Judaism, Buddhism, Christianity and Islam.

The post The five major world religions first appeared on History Lab.
