In the women’s prison in Saragossa, which housed inmates from that Kingdom and the Basque Provinces, abuses and punishments were carried out, according to Pedro María Ric, Mayor of Crime of the Court of Aragon. Pedro María was also Judge Protector of the Real Casa de la Galera in Zaragoza. In his attempt to improve the conditions of the prisoners, he proposed that the Archbishopric of Saragossa allocate 3,000 ducats for this purpose on a permanent basis, an objective that was approved by the Council of Castile.

The post Misery in the women’s prison of Saragossa (1797) first appeared on History Lab.

At the end of the 18th century, the Kingdom of Aragon suffered a cereal shortage. The supply decreased, and the Audiencia of Aragon prohibited the export of grain to cities such as Lérida, Tárrega and Balaguer. As a result, the price of bread rose in these territories, forcing the corregidor of Lleida to ask the Council of Castile to allow the little grain that remained to be extracted. The fin-de-siècle crises joined the administrative borders, hindering the distribution of basic resources. The document, dated 1797, refers to this phenomenon and to the inclement weather that reduced the harvest in March due to snow and ice.

Social mobility within the group of day labourers without property is determined by the moment in the life cycle in which they find themselves and by the space in which the day labourer’s activity is carried out. The graph shows that in the city the level of social mobility is lower than in the countryside and, above all, than in the huerta. The municipality of Lorca (Murcia) is at an intermediate level due to its characteristics as an agro-city. In short, neighbourhood relations, familiarity, solidarity and proximity are closely related to this phenomenon, which is also linked to the economic conditions of the areas of activity.

The post Distribution by head of household of day labourers without property according to age group.

With this resource, the authors highlight the social mobility of the peasantry at the end of the Ancien Régime in the municipality of Lorca (Murcia). The relationship between day labourers, tenant farmers and tenant farmers shows a decrease in the number of day labourers over the course of their life cycle, while the group of farm labourers remains stable. The change of occupation among day labourers, who account for more than 50% of the heads of household aged between 20 and 25, becomes more pronounced from the age of 50 onwards.

The post Socio-professional distribution by heads of household according to age groups.

This census draws on the experience of the Floridablanca Census (1787). It was commissioned in 1797 and published in full in 1801. However, the data provided by it should be taken with caution; rather, it should be complemented with other historical sources. We can find data by provinces on men, women, bachelors, married, widowed, clerics, and numerous trades such as merchants, craftsmen, farmers or fishmongers.

The post Godoy’s 1797 Census, published in 1801 first appeared on History Lab.
