Teresa Montalvo was a Cuban intellectual whose literary and political salon shone in Madrid at the end of the 18th century, located in an estate that no longer exists on Calle Luna and the old Calle Panaderos. Married to the Count of Jaruco, Teresa’s life changed when she moved to Madrid in 1789. In the capital, her intelligence, personality and social skills turned her house, where she had a large library, into a political, economic and cultural centre that was frequented by Goya, Moratín and other writers and intellectuals of the time. Despite her personal difficulties, such as the death of her husband in 1807 or the rumours that identified her as the lover of José I during the War of Independence, her figure is considered a catalyst of Enlightenment ideas, a facilitator of projects and business – especially between Spain and Cuba – and an intelligent person who knew how to make the most of the Spanish court customs of the time. The video, 4.48 minutes long, is part of “Madrid, Ciudad de las Mujeres”, a cultural and touristic application where the traces of women in the city of Madrid are recovered http://madridciudaddelasmujeres.es/ and to which we refer for this description.

The post Teresa Montalvo a salonnière.

Radio documentary in which prestigious historians analyse the complex personality and reign of Philip II, his Empire and the difficulties in managing it, as well as his determination to defend the Catholic religion. It highlights his facet as a Renaissance prince who built El Escorial and treasured fourteen thousand volumes in his library; as an art collector (Bosch, Titian, Flemish painters, etc.) or as a promoter of town planning and fortifications in America, in Cuba, Puerto Rico and Panama, for example. It deals with his image distorted by the Black Legend as a fanatic king and defender of the Inquisition, which was propagated by his enemies in England and the Netherlands. Apart from self-interested manipulations, the video also analyses the dark points of his reign, from the death of his son, the infant Charles, to the long and continuous wars he waged as a champion of Catholicism. Wars against England, the Netherlands and the Turks left the country exhausted and on the verge of ruin with several bankruptcies. In Documentos RNE, Modesta Cruz tackles the controversial figure of Philip II through leading specialists such as the professors of Modern History at the Complutense University of Madrid, Enrique Martínez and Fernando Bouza. Also featured are commentaries by Geoffrey Parker and John Elliot, and the late Manuel Fernández Álvarez and Joseph Pérez, great connoisseurs of the period of Philip II.

The post Philip II, Renaissance prince and champion of the Catholic faith first appeared on History Lab.

Radio documentary that deals with the figure of Cardinal Cisneros as a man of the Church and of the State at a key time in the history of Spain, the reign of the Catholic Monarchs. Between the Middle Ages and the Modern Age, in the midst of a serious political, dynastic and religious crisis, he stood out for his reforms in the ecclesiastical sphere and for his intervention in political life. Confessor to Isabella the Catholic and, shortly afterwards, archbishop of the primate see of Toledo, his role was fundamental, especially at two important moments: first, at the death of Queen Isabella, and later, after the death of her son-in-law Philip the Handsome. At around the age of seventy, Cisneros took over the regency, from where he contributed to the defence of the monarchical institution. As a cultural patron, he was notable for the creation of a university in Alcalá de Henares and the publication of a Polyglot Bible to correct the translation errors that had accumulated over time. With a script by Modesta Cruz, Documentos RNE takes a closer look at the historical figure of Cardinal Cisneros with the testimony of professors Miguel Ángel Ladero and Antonio Alvar Ezquerra, professor José Luis Gonzalo Sánchez-Molero, and the director of the International Centre for Cisneros Historical Studies at the University of Alcalá, Dolores Cabañas. It also features the opinions of the Hispanist and Prince of Asturias laureate, Joseph Pérez

The post Cardinal Cisneros, Church and State policy first appeared on History Lab.

Series broadcast between 2015 and 2016 by TVE, which, in 17 episodes, tells the story of Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and King of the Hispanic Monarchy, in a somewhat rushed manner.

TV series inspired by the life of Queen Isabella I of Castile, broadcast on La 1 TVE between 2012 and 2014. It had 3 seasons and 39 episodes.
