The presence of the Hispanic Monarchy in America resulted in the dissemination of the identity of the conquerors, their language, developing an intense process of evangelisation, hispanisation and acculturation. In this context, the first universities were created in the mid-16th century, such as those of Mexico (1551) and Lima (1555). The process continued throughout the following decades with other foundations in other places, such as Quito.

The post On founding a university in Quito first appeared on History Lab.

DomiNations is a strategy video game available on both Android and iOS in which you start chronologically from a small village in ancient times to managing a thriving metropolis in the near future. During the evolution of the game it is possible to trade and fight with nations further back in time or advanced in time, generating evident differences in resources and allowing to observe what it means for each player.
Through this videogame it is possible to study the military and technological strategy that has made possible the great discoveries of history, introducing great virtual personalities to explain it, such as Leonardo Da Vinci or Catherine the Great. In addition, the commanders of the armies are real historical figures such as Napoleon Bonaparte, Joan of Arc or Alexander the Great, through which you can appreciate their biography and most important events. History can also be learnt through the construction of the Wonders of the World, such as the Pyramids of Egypt or the Roman Coliseum, full of descriptions and anecdotes.

The post DomiNations first appeared on History Lab.

Historical strategy game in which the player, through the convergence of cultures and his decisions, will be in charge of creating the human story of his civilisation

The post Humankind first appeared on History Lab.

Humankind is a historical, economic, military and social strategy video game in which the player is responsible for creating a civilisation and advancing it over the centuries through increasingly complex decisions, setting the path for all its citizens. Once the civilisation has been created, elements from up to 60 well-defined real cultures and histories from the Ancient to the Contemporary Ages can be integrated.
Playably, each of the cultures present in the game presents unique challenges and possibilities, showing the reasons why some of them managed to achieve hegemony (total or partial) in their time of development. The possibilities of combining cultures are almost limitless, facing different historical events through shocking decisions that will mark the evolution of the scientific advances that will be discovered during the game, while each element of the game has been captured with the utmost historical rigour.
As far as the game system and battles are concerned, the “4X” system has been chosen, mixing real-time strategy with the more classic board turns. The armies and special units of each culture will be deployed across the map squares, using military strategy to besiege and occupy other cities.
The ultimate goal is not to destroy the other civilisations. In this case, a so-called “fame” system has been chosen, with each difficulty overcome being rewarded with fame points. In the end, the player with the most fame will win, leaving the greatest possible mark on the game world, and thus influencing the other cultures in a reciprocal way.

The post Humankind first appeared on History Lab.

The fourth installment in the Civilization series. The aim of the game is to lead a civilisation from 4,000 BC, in an attempt to grow it to world domination. Among the new features compared to previous instalments is the introduction of the concept of great characters from history (artists, merchants, prophets, engineers and scientists), who offer extra benefits. It also incorporates for the first time in the series the possibility of founding and expanding religions and adopting an official religion. It also replaces the choice of forms of government with the adoption of political principles. The UN takes centre stage and artificial intelligence is far superior to previous versions.

The post Sid Meier’s Civilization IV first appeared on History Lab.

The fifth installment of the Civilization series. The game builds on the basis of the other titles in the series (creation and development of a civilisation). The most notable change is in the map, which is fragmented into hexagons, to make the game more natural. There are also changes in the joining and movement of military units, the increase in the production cost of military units, the promotion of the strategic and diplomatic part of the game and the increase in the cost of armed conflicts. In addition, the artificial intelligence is much more “human” than in previous titles.

The post Sid Meier’s Civilization V first appeared on History Lab.

Sixth installment in the Civilization series. The game follows the series’ signature model of civilisation creation and development. There are improvements to the growth of urban centres (which grow in size on the hexagonal map), and to the way military units can be stacked on the same squares. It features further development of the technology tree, renamed the research system, and the artificial intelligence of opponents. It offers the possibility to play with more than 30 civilisations and, apart from the campaign mode, includes 6 historical scenarios.

The post Sid Meier’s Civilization VI first appeared on History Lab.
