This graph shows the gender inequality of the didactic resources that make up some of the textbooks corresponding to the last year of Compulsory Secondary Education (ESO). In this sense, we compare the contents of the SM publishing house for the 4th year of ESO, where, after a decade, we can see that the percentage of female characters has increased from 5.1 % in 2007 to 12 % ten years later. In the Anaya publishing house’s edition, for the same year in 2017, the percentage of women exceeds 17%. Although this does not represent a significant advance, it does mean that the number of male characters has decreased from around 95 % to less than 88 % in 2017. Despite a slight change in the arrangement and balance of the material chosen, the fact is that the figure and prominence of men in the story continue to be prioritised, making the role of women largely invisible.

The post Representation of illustrations and characters by year of publication, gender and publisher (4th ESO) first appeared on History Lab.

Chapter of the series “Horizontes Ciencias Sociales”, part of the Encuentro channel, broadcast by the Ministry of Education (Argentina), which explains the process of mining the immense silver deposits by the Spanish colonists. This exploitation had a lot to do with the growth of the city of Potosí, a city that reached similar dimensions to European cities such as London. It also tells what life was like for the mine workers, in this case the Ayaconas Indians, and how their work equipment was made. Of course, the great human toll of the hard work in the mines is not overlooked. Gradually, guilds began to form around the exploitation. In this context, inequalities increased as a result of the wealth and the increase in capital of a few bourgeois merchants whose social ascent had repercussions in Europe, especially in Spain.

The post Potosí.

The century of the Enlightenment was the century of the master painter Francisco de Goya, José Cadalso and the musician Domingo Arquimbau, but it was also the century of women, not forgetting that it was the scene of the first Tonadilla divas and of many aristocratic ladies who practised artistic activities as entertainment. The chapter deals with the crucial role played by some well-educated women with an interest in culture and high social standing, such as María Josefa Alfonso Pimentel, María Francisca de Sales Portocarrero (Countess of Montijo) and Josefa Amar y Borbón, who favoured the creation of literary salons and social clubs or conversation houses, as Jovellanos called them. These salons challenged the patterns and models belonging to traditionally male spheres. This video documentary shows biographical sketches of the lives of these women and their drive to protect culture and the figure of numerous artists, writers and philosophers. Their lives were not easy, as they had to fight and defend themselves from constant attack by institutions, including the Inquisition.

The post Women in history.
