If the aim is to analyse the educational system in the rural world of present-day Albacete in the mid-18th century, it is necessary to know from the outset the number and typology of the educational institutions that provided services, their geographical distribution and their financing. The backbone of these institutions was the teachers, who were in direct contact with potential students and whose professional and social situation was very much determined by the context in which they found themselves.
Thanks to the data provided by the General Answers of the Ensenada Cadastre (1750-1756), it is possible to quantify the educational centres in operation and their location in the mid-18th century. To this we can add the information provided by the Personnel Books of laymen and ecclesiastics from different territories of La Mancha, Cuenca and Murcia, what we know today as Albacete and the 87 municipalities represented on the map.
Of the 87 municipalities that currently make up Albacete, 45 had at least one school (51.7%), making it one of the territories with the highest percentage of schools in the whole country. Although the numbers are encouraging, an irregularity can be observed in terms of school distribution, with the greatest concentration in the northern part of Albacete, corresponding to the former province of Cuenca. The data also show a central area with much less concentration, with large areas without teachers, such as the area between El Bonillo, Alcaraz and Peñas de San Pedro, partly due to municipalities with few inhabitants, sometimes with less than 200 inhabitants.
The distribution of the school network in this area and at this time tended to respond to factors specific to the different municipalities, such as agricultural productivity, the intensity of monetary circulation, the concentration of inhabitants or the role of the town councils as the backbone of literacy.

The post School network in the province of Albacete in the middle of the 18th century first appeared on History Lab.

In this 15-minute educational video produced by Academia Play, the Visual Thinking technique is used to explain the importance of the Spanish Inquisition or Tribunal of the Holy Office created in 1478 by the Catholic Monarchs. The video focuses on disproving misinformation through a series of contrasted references about the origin, purpose and way of acting. The description of the video states: “In this video we are going to talk about the Inquisition, and above all we are going to focus on the Spanish Inquisition. When we hear the word inquisition we immediately think of death, torture, fanaticism, intolerance, control and fear…. These characteristics undoubtedly existed and that is why this phenomenon has tended to be explained from a somewhat sensationalist and often distorted point of view. In this video we are going to refute a series of commonly accepted clichés, most of the time due to the bombardment of erroneous information. At the end of the video we will include a small bibliography for those who want to approach this subject from a rigorous approach. We have been advised by Don César Cervera Moreno”.

The post The Inquisition in 15 minutes first appeared on History Lab.

The European colonisers trafficked millions of slaves captured mainly in Africa in order to use them as labour for numerous activities. In this way, thousands and thousands of people were transported to various regions of the planet, as we know well in the case of the American continent. This resource provides access to a large database called the “Transatlantic Slave Trade Database”, which contains an immense amount of information on the development of slavery from the 16th century to the end of the 19th century. It is a project supported by the National Endowment for the Humanities (United States) and is the result of the efforts of scholars from different institutions, including historians, cartographers and slave trade specialists and researchers. The database itself is divided into various fields such as timelines, maps, 3D videos, essays and estimates and a detailed image bank.

The post The transatlantic slave trade first appeared on History Lab.

This website brings us closer to the historical past of the Lecrín Valley. In this regard, it is worth highlighting the important work carried out by the Grupo Catastro-Lecrín, which was created in 2009 and belongs to the Centro de Estudios Históricos del Valle de Lecrín y la Alpujarra (CEHVAL), which deals with history through the Valle de Lecrín and La Alpujarra of Granada and which highlights the great value that can be gained from the exploitation of such a valuable source of documentation as the Cadastre of the Marqués de la Ensenada. The attempted fiscal reform of the Ensenada Cadastre in Andalusia was carried out during the first four years after its inception in 1750. The operations carried out in the Intendencia de Granada were under the direction of Luis González Torres Navarra, Marquis of Campoverde. Initially, the purpose of this operation was to improve in some way the system of administration of the territory. Ensenada’s documentation has allowed us to discover aspects of society, as well as the complexity of a predominantly rural geographical space.

The post Catastro-Lecrín Group first appeared on History Lab.

The Seville Museum of Fine Arts was founded as the “Museum of Paintings” by Royal Decree on 16 September 1835, with works from convents and monasteries confiscated by the liberal government of Mendizábal. This art gallery is considered to be one of the most important in Spain and through this interactive virtual tour we can easily and quickly access a large part of its permanent exhibitions of religious-themed paintings, mostly belonging to the Baroque style. It also has important works by Francisco Pacheco, Zurbarán and Murillo.
The building where the museum is located dates back to the beginning of the 17th century, built on the ancient remains of a Mudejar building, the design of which is attributed to the architect Juan de Oviedo.

The post Museum of Fine Arts of Seville first appeared on History Lab.
